Synaptic plasticity in the brain is still a mystery, as if a magician is chanting a spell while looking at a magic orb containing synapses to control the synaptic plasticity. In this issue, Koh et al. (pages 740-752) found that astrocytes co-release glutamate and D-serine to integrate synaptic plasticity in nearby synapses and induce heterosynaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. This orchestration of astrocytes renders a memory flexible, resulting in cognitive flexibility. Artwork by Younghee Lee. Comments are closed.
